CPU frequency stopped changing after a few overclocks

So I tried how far I can push my fx-6300 on stock voltages but I noticed that the CPU frequency in windows doesnt change after a few tries. Not even when I reset my BIOS settings or put stock clocks in. I got to 3.8GHz when overclocking. I have an asrock 970 extreme3 r2.0 and in the BIOS it says the CPU frequency is the stock 3500 MHz (which I have set it to now) but when in windows, cpu-z and windows say that my cpu's max frequency is 3.8 GHz. I cant figure out what's wrong here. I have restarted my pc many times and tried changing the values in BIOS. No effect. Any help is appreciated!!

Yeah it was stable for a ~15 min run on prime95 but the cpu was throttling like crazy :D Definitely gonna turn the voltage down and see if I can get it stable and better temps. I was running 1.3 volts.

66C max when it started to throttle and I have an enermax ETS-T40-TB CPU cooler. I lowered the voltage to 1.2625 volts (it was 1.26something at least, cant remember accurately). I'll test it now.

update: 2 cores failed immeaditely when I started prime95. Now I'm gonna test 4.2GHz.

Ok wait wait wait. You need to stay under 63C...

Do not overclock from a high number and move down.

Do it the other way around, incrementally increase clock rate until you lose stability then increase voltage(run stress tests inbetween) and repeat.
While doing this ALWAYS monitor temps and stay under 63C.

Yeah I have done overclocking before with my CPU and I got to something like 4.0 GHz on stock voltages but I wasn't satisfied. Temps were ok then.

What a pity I can only change the voltage in 0.0125V increments :( Hopefully 1.25 will be stable

update: I finished the 1.2625V test and the temps rose to 64-65 in the end. Finished the 1.25V test and it stayed at 63C stable. I'm gonna try with stock 1.2375V now. Hopefully it will be stable this time.

2nd update: Started prime95 with 1.2375V, after about a minute core 6 failed. So considering there's a heat wave covering Finland at the moment and my ambient teperature is 3 to 4 degrees higher than normal (25.5C inside atm) I'm quite satisfied with that 4.1GHz/1.25V. That's my final OC for this chip :) Thanks Novuake for help!
