if I update from a 680 to a R9 290x will there be a big difference in FPS. my current setup is I5 4670k with 8gb ram I don't play above 1080p. I have an offer to trade my 680 towards a 290x plus some cash on my end.. its the MSI 290x Twin Frozer model

The upgrade would give a performance increase of about 23% ( relative to 290x). At 1080p, the performance difference is a less impressive 16 percent. In terms of FPS, it will mean about 5-7 more frames and possibly one extra level of AA setting (like from MSAA x2 to MSAA x4).

so its more of future proofing then a significant gain in FPS for my levels.

Correct. Overkills are not the worst thing in the world since they give more time towards your next upgrade.
