Basically, I have zero intention of running Crossfire with these two. All I want to know is can I run them simultaneously? I want to hook my primary ASUS PB278Q Monitor to my 290x, and my ASUS VH242's to the R7 240, would that work? I basically just wanna run the 290X off the 1440P monitor only.

Yes, that should work, although the performance hit you get from having extra monitors is so small that you should just connect everything to the R9 290X IMHO.

Basically, it wouldnt be worth the extra electricity, heat, and noise. The performance hit would be extremely small if you just use connect all monitors to the r9 290x.

Just to clarify, cause this was an issue i've had in the past with AMD Cards, can the 290x run the 3 monitors on its own without running Eyeinfinity or w/e its called? I have no interest in a 5760x1080 setup

Yes, it can do that easily; My second screen (for browsing and videos) doesn't really affect the performance even though I'm only running a GTX 760 2GB.
