Hi all. Let me preface this by saying I'm an absolute fool when it comes to hardware - and the logic/nomenclature involved - so I'll try explain everything as best I can and if you could keep answers equally comprehensible that'd be much appreciated!

I am trying to get my Panasonic DMP-BD81 Blu Ray player connected to my Viewsonic VX2260 monitor. However, for some reason when I connect the player to the monitor with my HDMI cable, it receives no signal. Or, ever so briefly (if I haven't tried in a while), I'll see the Blu Ray player's home page/menu, and the words 'HDMI AV' appear in the top corner of the screen, showing that it's at least capable of receiving the signal. Similarly, when I connect the monitor to my laptop with the same HDMI cable, it works perfectly; no signal problems.

Connected to the player, I have tried the monitor's built-in options using the buttons on the bottom to select the desired input etc, but it keeps coming back to saying there's no signal, and I've connected the Blu Ray player to our dedicated flatscreen television and it works perfectly there. Whilst there, I explored menu options on the Blu Ray player itself and found nothing I think would help.

Moving on, I bought a HDMI-to-DVI cable, thinking this would solve the issue. Sure enough I got a sustained picture on the computer monitor in good quality, but silly me didn't realise that the HDMI-DVI wouldn't transmit audio because of the latter acronym.

So what I'm doing now is trying to find a device which will take an HDMI input, and split it into an HDMI output and an audio jack output separately. Finally, I found a seemingly perfect solution in the form of this extractor/converter http://www.amazon.co.uk/ViewHD-Audio-Extractor-Converter-Model-VHD-H2HA/dp/B008LOIKX6

Unfortunately, in the reviews section, a guy called Steve issues a word of warning; saying that although the device is good it's an EDID passthrough (explaining that this means that the receiving device, like the monitor, makes the decisions and it's quite likely that it'll "tell" the BR Player to send audio in stereo rather than 5.1 - which are the speakers I have. Apparently there are smarter connecting devices I can use, but they cost a lot of money.

So to end this annoyingly long message, here are a few little questions I'd appreciate answered, to set my mind at ease:

1. Is it possible to just use my green audio jack wire to just connect the extractor device directly to my 5.1 sub-woofer (which acts as the nervous system for all my speakers)?, and without the EDID passthrough thing being a problem and resulting in stereo? Since I'd be connecting it directly to a 5.1 device, it sounds like a stupid question with an obvious answer, but I'm going to be poor soon so I need to be sure before I shell out for the extractor!

2. If for some reason that won't work, can anyone advise me on what bit of kit I should buy instead of the linked extractor? Cost-effective, if possible!

3. And while I'm here, why on earth did my monitor not accept the HDMI-to-HDMI connection to begin with?? A signal DOES occur for a second sometimes, and the HDMI cable DOES work with my computer, and the BR player DOES work with our TV screen... so what's going on? It's important that I understand the relationship between BR players and computer monitors, because I'm planning on shelling out for this soon: http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/monitors/1306582/aoc-q2770pqu for work and gaming purposes, and I need to know beforehand if it's going to have similar issues with my Blu Ray player and HDMI cable.

OKAY, thanks for reading all that and bearing with me! Any help thoroughly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah this may be the simplest solution and there's a good chance I'll end up doing it. I've been asking around in forums of other sites besides this one and someone has also recommended to me that I simply sell my blu ray player and just start using a piece of software called makemkv, so I can continue to buy blu rays but then just create my own files from them.

Will have to test that before I can make that decision, though!
