Is 2nd/3rd Generation Motherboard compatible with those of 1st generation?

I am using the First Generation i3-540, recently my motherboard has gone dead, Now I want to buy a new motherboard, I have few questions, please solve them and help me choose my new motherboard.

1. Are 2nd/3rd/4th Generation Motherboards compatible with those of 1st Generation Motherboards, if yes
2. Is Intel DH77EB compatible for my 1st generation motherboard.
3.If no, then which motherboard should I go for.

Also Please tell me what is the main specification which is necessary while purchasing the Motherboard to be compatible. For Eg.. LGA 1156....

Different socket = physically incompatible = no good for you.

If you need a motherboard for an LGA1156 CPU, look for LGA1156 motherboards.

The most important specification is the socket. An LGA1156 CPU needs an LGA1156 motherboard. Therefore none of the newer boards will work.

The boards for that CPU are really expensive, try to find a used one on Ebay.

No, 1156 boards only support that first generation. Along with LGA1366 for the 1st gen workstation chips.

LGA1155 supports both 2nd and 3rd gen chips, however this still varies by chipset and some 2nd Gen boards will need a BIOS update to run 3rd gen chips.

LGA1150 supports, and will support, Haswell 4th Gen and Broadwell 5th Gen, again a BIOS update will be necessary for some boards to support the next generation processors.

H77 motherboards, like the Intel one you listed, support 2nd and 3rd gen chips only.

3. You probably need to look on ebay since the socket was discontinued in 2012.
find one in the format you need(M-atx or full atx) and socket 1156.

Perhaps it is time to make a new build. Even the cheapest modern G1840, a $50 cpu is faster
