Hey guys,
So I am building my very first gaming computer and this is my first time ever even owning a windows computer. As such I have questions about the OS. I have every part now in my possession and will be assembling everything with an experienced friend this weekend.

What continued to elude me is understanding Window Operating Systems. I called up Microsoft because I was trying to take advantage of a student deal on Windows 8.1 Pro but was told because I am making a computer and therefore have no OS already on the system that it wouldn't work. She told me I needed Windows 8 System Builder.

However i've been googling Windows 8 System Builder [and where to buy it in Canada] and can't find anything... I'm wondering if someone can help me, here are my questions:

1. What type of Windows 8 do I need: Pro, Retail, OEM, System Builder?
2. What's the difference between the above types?
3. Where can I buy the type I need (preferably, locally, in a store in Canada)?

Thanks guys!
PS. as I am new to Windows I need it to update itself and do all the fiddly stuff on it's own (i've heard OEM doesn't do this? I have no idea though.)

Solution
Get Windows 8.1.

1. OEM.

2. OEM: The OEM license is locked into the motherboard once installed

Retail: Microsoft will help with support.

Pro: more features such as ability to join a domain, Remote Desktop Connection, etc. If you don't need those...not worth the extra money.

3. Most technology type stores or online.

Clarification to your #2:

OEM preinstalls (HP, Dell, Acer, etc.) are tied to a key that's embedded in the motherboard firmware and cannot be transferred to anything but an identical board.

OEM purchased off the shelf can be transferred as long as it's removed from the old machine first. <-- Change from Windows 7.
