I am currently living in an apartment complex and the poor wireless connection I am receiving is unbearable and I am looking for some advice. Their are 2 access points relatively close to me, one on the floor above me and the other below me. Both are also broadcasting on the same channel as well as about 10 other wireless networks close by(out of my control and i'm forced to use wife). I recently purchased a pair of some 9dbi antennas but realize now that was a probably a big mistake that probably hurt my vertical signal and increased any interference i was getting. I also have an old ddrwt router i could use as repeater or something but range is not an issue and don't think it could be useful. I think my best bet is some low dbi direction antenna but would love for someone to drop some knowledge on me or any recommendations.

So if I read this right your internet access comes from outside your apartment via wireless. You do not have a router/internet connection inside your apartment.

With antenna bigger tends to always be better and directional should work better....to a point sometime walls/floors also increase the amount they absorb as you increase the signal levels.

So you can go with say something like

But I would use a wireless bridge that converts from ethernet to wireless. You would plug it into the ethernet port on your pc or into a wan port on a router.

Something like engenious enh202

Cost wise the bridge will likely be cheaper. This unit in effect has 2 antenna built into one. You can save a bit if...

Using directional antenna you would need 2 and I am not real sure how well they will combine. Even if you live with just 1 you still need microwave cable and the converters that go from the tiny connectors the equipment you like have to the big N connectors almost all antenna have.

Before you get real far try to lay the omni antenna on their side that will change the orientation to vertical. It likely will not make a huge difference but maybe you get lucky.
