so as the title says im going to upgrade my amd motherboard cpu to intel, just after some advice and feedback from you guys who have intel as to whats the best options for my budget. i currently have a amd 8320 which is a good cpu but i just want to go with intel as ive always had amd systems and all my friends with intel systems get better fps ect than me.
my budget would be about £200-£225 for a new cpu and motherboard. any ideas guys :) cheers

FPS doesn't have much to do with the CPU. You will usually only see less than 10fps difference between CPU's, and the 8320 is a very capable CPU. GPU's are what have the biggest effect on fps. If I was you, I would put that money towards a better GPU.

What GPU do you currently have?

Alright well that is definitely a high end GPU. You could try overclocking your 8320 and it will get you better fps. Are you noticing lagging in games or do you just want more fps?

But here is a build that is slightly over budget, but is well worth it.

The Xeon 1230v3 will give you the same performance as an i7 4670, but cost only £175. It doesn't have integrated graphics and has locked multipliers, so no overclocking. But it is such a strong CPU that you won't anything stronger for a while. Also it is on the 1150 socket, so you can upgrade to the new i5/i7's that Intel will be releasing.

The motherboard I have listed is a very nice board. It uses the Z97 chipset (which is great for overclocking if you get a CPU that supports it in the futurez), supports ram speeds from 1066 to 3000, has USB 3.0 headers and supports crossfire.

my 8320 is overclocked to 4.1ghz at the moment and my friend has a i5-4670k with the same graphics card but he gets around 10fps more in some games for example wolfenstein.
there isnt any real lagging in games but to say i have a good graphics card i thought id be getting better fps, for example i get around a average of 55fps on wolfenstein, occasionally max's at around 63/64 but normally sits around 55ish, but my friends sits at 63/64 all the time.

i would ideally like to overclock the new cpu too, so the xeon wouldnt be my first choice thats why i was looking at the k-series intel processors.

What is the rest of your system info? If you have DDR 1333 or something it may not be the CPU at all.

I would buy a higher end cooler like the corsair h100i and overclock that CPU as hard as safely possible - I mean who cares if you are pushing it hard if you are just going to get rid of it later anyway, and you can switch to a faster intel system once you get your money's worth form the 8320.

Intels are faster though, so yes like above poster said - I would go with a i5 4690k and a Z97 motherboard if you need to upgrade.

Not for your price range. The next step is the 4790k, after that there is the 4930k but that system probably isn't much faster if at all with a single R9 290. I would wait for the next x99 platform coming in August if I was going the 400-500$ CPU route anyway.

You could look at the i5 4440 but at that point you are getting really close to the same performance as your 8320.

You should either wait, or buy a 4690k and overlock it, if you decided you have to upgrade now.

my full system is as follows ;

-FX8320 8 core @ 4.17ghz
-16gb Patriot Viper 1600mhz
-Gigabyte GA-78lmt-usb3
-R9 290 Sapphire Tri-X OC
-512gb Crucial mx100 ssd
-XFX Pro Core Edition 850watt 80+

the idea wasnt to use this cpu and motherboard for too much longer, maybe sell that and re-coop some of the cash ive spent on the new cpu and motherboard.

so it seems the 4690k is the best option for my budget as we speak, i wont be upgrading for another 1-2 weeks yet, so hopefully some deals may come up.

what do you think of this deal ..... its £255.58

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-014-AS&groupid=2833&catid=2846

also comes with watch dogs, which i already have but suppose i could sell it make maybe £10-£15 back

That "deal" looks fine, but you could pick up the 4690K and another good motherboard for the same price, so it's nothing real exciting.

If it was me, the 255 pounds isn't worth another 10fps. The intel is slightly faster, but in some games you probably won't notice any difference at all.

Do you have your graphic card drivers up to date?

Heck you would probably get the most speed by adding another R9 290 and going crossfire if that motherboard can handle it. Or you can sell the amd system and go intel, but again, you might be dissapointed.

putting another 290 into my set-up is not a option as my current motherboard will only take one graphics card, its only a budget motherboard.
so im more drawn towards the intel option, as i dont want to swap my graphics card as ive only had it a couple of months. so only other option i can see is a motherboard and cpu swap

Well go for the 4690k and z97 then. Make sure to get a decent cooler, cooler master 212 or better. The intel is faster clock for clock, but you should try to get to 4.3 or 4.4 ghz minimum for more substantial cpu gains.

Here are a few options. The companies you want to stick with are Asus, ASRock, and Gigabyte in my opinion. MSI is not horrible, but they seem to have more problems than the other three I just listed.

Here is an ASRock option. It has everything from 6 sata ports, 32 gigs of a decent range of ram speeds, and both Crossfire and SLI support.

Here is a Gigabyte option that is quite nice. It has also has everything as the ASRock, but it has a very large range of ram speeds.

And here is an Asus option. The downfall of this is that it has only 4 sata ports, whereas the other two options have 6.

And just for the hell of it, here is MSI's option.

I personally would go with the Gigabyte or ASRock. Both are reputable companies that have good customer/driver support. And you can get them a little cheaper if you only want either Crossfire or SLI and not the option to have both.
