What do you guys think is the max temperature for running this cpu without damaging it, considering with my OC it's bordering on 75 degrees centigrade
Thanks in advance :)

go to this link and scroll down to "t case"
Intel says 72.72 C
I would go by that.
I do not over clock and the room with my computer (which has a I5 4690K in it) stays about 80- 85 F my CPU temp only gets to about 60 C, with the stock cooler. That's playing games like the Witcher 2, Skyrim, Saints Row IV, Crysis 2, and other such games. 75 seems high what is the room temp you are in? adding some case fans could make a big difference too, and should not cost much to do...

I personally would not run it at that temp for hours on end... But that is just me, I don't believe you will cause any damage to it - I'd avoid stress tests till you lower the clock or get a better CPU cooler though.

Edit: just out of curiosity what is your OC Ghz/voltage and also are you using the stock cooler?

Stock fan isnt any good for overclocking, it is only work for working on stock clocks and turbo mode if the temps are good enough.

If you plan to overclock further you must get a good aftermarket cooler.

That Guide explains the critical aspects of processor temperatures, as well as how to properly run tests at 100% workload and idle.

It's always helpful when forum members start a thread to post ambient temperature, Vcore, clock speed, cooler, test software and monitoring software so we have enough information to work with prior to anyone attempting to draw a valid conclusion.

I have 6 120mm fans on my computer with red LED lights ran my about 32 bucks, I would not keep pushing the temp that high on a cpu. GPUs can handle that not CPUs.

I just got my rig assembled a few days ago and I have been seeing Temps in the high 70s, like 77 or 78 under load. Keep in mind, my load is only BF-4 @ Ultra settings. I've been wanting to see what this I-5 4690K can do. I've seen threads of people getting it up to 4.5. The reviews have been great so far and I don't think I have even seen a single bad review for this chip. I also heard keep everything at stock until I get my after-market cooler. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best / easiest cooler to install? I heard with water, you have to dis-assemble the whole thing to install it :(, True??

Ok if you have not OCed your chip yet and you are getting temps that High something is wrong. Either your thermal paste got messed up, or the room you are in is insanely hot (I mean so hot you would not be able to stand it), or you have virtually no air flow in your case. I don't play Battle field 4 but I just finished the Witcher 3. I play on max settings and with my stock cooler and the chip not OCed I got temps in the mid 60's, Also note I'm in florida and the room I game in gets very warm as i'm in an old house and the room is farthest from the ac.
I have up graded to a aftermarket cooler, the Cooler Master Evo 212 (that's an air cooler not water). and now my temps run in the mid 50's while playing.
The evo 212 is a very good after market choice based on over all performance and price. Please not I still have not OCed my chip as I play games on one monitor at 1080p and have not found a need for it yet. I feel like i'm repeat what every one else always says but here it is, Every Chip is different, be careful not to base your chip on what others do or don't do. I suggest a lot of research before your purchase a cooler and before OCing your chip.
Now back to your temp. I believe there is something wrong if your temp is hitting 77-78 C. I would suggest ordering some thermal paste and resetting you stock cooler. unless you think your airflow is bad in you case. you could try removing the side panel and playing with thatoff so air could get to it to see if that makes a difference. 120mm fans are pretty cheap.
The recommended temp by intel in 72.72 C check the link and look at t case

I would hate for you to burn the chip up or shorten it's life before you even see what it can do.

As far a as having to disassemble everything for a water cooler if you mean removing your stock cooler then yes. if you mean removing everything that depends on your case. if you pull the back panel (generally the right side if you are looking at it from the front) where you run your wires to keep your pc looking pretty you might have a big square access panel that will allow you to add a after market cooler with out taking you mother board out of the case. Pretty much if you can see the back side of your MB it should be fairly easy.
Again I would recommend the Cooler master evo 212. make sure you check you compatibility, I like to use pcpartpicker dot com. they have been very reliable for me. The Evo 212 is fairly tall. Good luck!!
PS: this is an old thread, if I didn't get and email you would not have gotten a reply, don't forget to check dates on the forum post.

Wow, great answer. I'm in Florida to, I live in Orlando and the weather here has been nice and I keep my apt really cool, low 70s. I'm with you I think my thermal paste or heat sink got "off or cooky" when I installed it, plus I have heard the paste that comes with the chip is garbage and not worth using anyway. I just ordered the 212 yesterday, I also added a tube of that artic silver ( the good thermal paste) and it will be here today. Yes, I have an open back panel to get to the backside of my MB. Hopefully it will go together pretty easy. One thing I didn't mention is that I did try to OC this chip a little, I saw high temps quick so I reverted back to default settings like 10 mins after I OCd it. I'm hoping I didn't mess the chip up. Airflow could be another culprit, I'm still trying to figure out the best configuration on my fans, and I'm going to fine tune it after I install the 212. Should I go heavy with the paste??? I've heard both ways, some say just a dot on the middle and spread around, very, very thin, and others say cover the whole chip and apply generously. What do you think?? Like I said it will be here today so I'm hoping to install tonight. Thanks a bunch for the 411. I will check the dates on these forums, I'm just getting back into building rigs again, back in the bench marking forums. I have been away from it for the last 5-6 years and my money has gotten better, so I'm trying to get back into building high end rigs and maxing them out. Again, thanks a bunch for the 411!!!! I will keep you posted on my temps after I get the 212 installed.

WOW is all I can say about the 212!!! I installed it in less then an hour, and my idle / load temps were 45-47 - Idle and 77-78 under load. Now, my idle temps are in the low to mid 30s, like 34-35, but its the ingame temps that are blowing me away. Before when I played BF 4 for an hour or so my temps would be 77-79, now its 42-44. I'm blown away by this cooler. Your first assumption about something being wrong if my temps where that high was right. The was almost no thermal paste on the back side of my heat sink or my chip. Also, like you said, I could get to the backside of my board, without taking it out and the installation of the cooler was a breeze!!!! I'm about to go and post some great reviews everywhere.

Thanks again for all of your help

The thermal paste is disputed all over the place for how to apply it. I would recommend a pea size (or a little bigger) drop in the middle and let it spread its self. if you spread it it's more likely to get and air pocket in it. just make sure it comes out 100% around the edges and not just in some spots. The 212 will come with thermal paste, that's what I used.

Well scratch all that I just noticed your second reply and you've already got it installed. Great to here your temp dropped so much, that's running cooler than mine but my room is hotter than yours and hotter than I would like it to be. I'm hoping for a cold winter this year (cold for Florida anyway). I'm in Spring Hill/ Weeki Wachie. Good luck with the new PC.

Alot of the reviews said that it was better to pay the extra 8 bucks and get the "Arctic Silver Brand" I put a good layer of the paste on, without it oozing out everywhere, but it still had great coverage. Between the directions, and a few video's that I watched on You Tube it was almost effortless, we'll not so much effortless but really, it was not nearly as bad as I expected. By far and away the craziest thing for me, is the "in-game temp" No lie, it stayed at 77 - 79 pretty much the whole time, if my chick had all of the windows open and airing the apt out
and it was hotter in here, I remember it getting as hot as 81. I stopped it of course, and cranked up the AC and it dropped back down. But now, my idle temp is 33 ( Used to be 44-46, and the in-game is 44 - 46 was the highest I saw last night. Then this morning, I got up early and it was cold as hell in my apt. and it was idling at 31. What a great great cooler!!! I put an awesome review up at Amazon and Newegg. I think I said in my previous message, you were right, there was hardly no paste on the chip or the heat sink. It was almost like it got rubbed off or something, there was barley anything to clean off the chip when I put the new cooler in. You even called that when I first told you about how hot it was running. Thanks for all of your input and advise on this deal!!! It truly helped me out!!

You guys get great temperatures out of your Hyper 212's. I have the 212 EVO (Arctic Silver compound) on my i5 4690k, 4.2Ghz @ 1.26v and end up at 76 degrees during AIDA64 Stress Test. Was hoping for a bit better.
