I recently backed up my Windows drive to a new external HD with XXCLONE. The copy was successful, but now on the source drive there are four mysterious files in the Windows folder that I cannot delete. They are titled 0, e, s and y, with no extensions.
The files are taking up around 8gb each, but display as 0 bytes, unknown owners, and attributes HSA.
They do not show up in explorer, even with show hidden folders enabled, I can find them only in certain folder analysis programs. When I try to delete them, it says they cannot be found. I have tried command line deletion, including DIR *., and shortnames.
I have booted into live Linux systems and deleted them there, emptied the trash, but they still will not go.
I have tried half a dozen file deletion programs, half of them cannot find the files, and if they can, when trying to delete them it says they cannot be found or that the file is in use. I have tried in safe mode to no avail. CHKDSK yielded no results either. I have run CCleaner with all of the relevant options enabled.
My system is clean.
I have googled around with as many relevant terms as I could think of and have not been able to find a solution.
