Concerning converting one of the drives on the same hard disk to NTFS.a

I have a D drive(FAT) and C drive (NTFS) on the same hard disk of my XP PC. Can I convert the D drive(FAT) to NTFS format? Is there any risk of damaging/losing files or causing any type of HD failure? If not, how can perform the conversion? Thanks!

Honestly the easier and best way is to copy everything on the D drive to another drive. Portable or not or even to the C Drive if you have space, then go to My Computer, Right click on D, Format, Select NTFS VS FAT32, make sure you do a quick format, once done copy everything back.
