I have an msi r9 270, and I am using a vga monitor with it. on three different occasions I have tried to plug an hdmi cable into the card, but as soon as the cable makes contact with the card it trips the GFCIs in my wall. is my hdmi port defective or is there a power threshold somewhere that is setting it off? I am using a 550w seasonic psu and a gigabyte ga-z77-hd3 motherboard

1, You WILL want to get a better PSU, since 550 watts probably aren't enough
2, You could try RMAing the GPU.

I would agree about checking to get an RMA on the card.

I do not think you need more power, at idle that card uses almost nothing and even under demanding games it would have a hard time pulling over 150 watts(you can get more with things like furmarks, but who does that day to day.). That is the numbers for the 270X as well.

Strange this is most computer stuff shares the same ground(so VGA and HDMI would use the same).

I may well be an issue with the GFCI, so an electrician should check it out as well.

I forgot to mention that the hdmi cable is gold plated (if that even affects anything), and it is plugged into a 30+ inch tv. the tv was on in all three tries. and I also have to stress the touching the bracket with the connector is what is tripping the GFCI. should I turn off the tv before connecting it to the port and see what that does? I would really hate to rma my card

Try using a non-gold plated cable.

The cable generally does not effect it.

Gold is just a good connector because it should be resistant to tarnishing. It takes YEARS for a connector to tarnish enough to even be an issue. Plug it and out every year and it would scrape off any build up :)

So touching the outside metal on the HDMI plug on the cable trips the GFCI? What happens when you touch the computer it self on the power supply.

touching the power supply and back of the case did nothing. just tried. both my tv and computer were off, and the power supply was too. as soon as the hdmi plug touched the graphics card it tripped

Can you try the system on another plug(GFCI if you can).

It is hard to be sure if it is a plug issue or a system issue.

I do have a lot of stuff plugged into the outlet that my system is plugged in to. but the thing is the hdmi cable only does that with my graphics card. it doesn't do it with my xbox 360 that is plugged into the same outlet as my computer. im thinking that I may have to rma my card at this point
