Question on case mod

Since there is no Mod section here, that I can see, I figured I'd post this question here since the OC guys would be most likely to have tried anything like this.

I'm just wondering if anybody has tried to mod the right hand case panel to open a hole in the panel adjacent to the bottom area of the motherboard where the cpu is. It seems as though the motherboard itself and the cooler bracket on the bottom of the board, have to act as a heat sink to some extent. I'm curious if installing a fan in this location to either draw hot air out of there (Heat has to get trapped between the board and case mounting) or blow cool air in there. My guess is that if you can keep these components cooler they'll draw some of the heat away from the cpu socket and motherboard itself which in turn should help the entire system.

The fan would of course have to be located on the outside, which I know isn't aesthetically pleasing, but function has to outweigh fashion sometimes. Any thoughts or input or experience with something similar is welcome. It's just a thought but it might just be one of those things that's so obvious nobody has ever thought of trying it. Or, it may be that it just doesn't get any results. I don't know, that's why I'm asking before the fact.

Nah, it would never work on my case. There is only about 1mm between the panel and the bottom bracket for the cpu cooler. But, I have no worries or problems with modding a case panel to accommodate an external fan with a custom shroud to protect it from accidental contact. My only concern/question is the effectiveness which is why I was asking if anybody had done it or had heard of anybody doing it and what kind of gain if any was achieved. Thanks though.
