Hello,

I just finished building a new system and I am going through the system diagnostics. I noticed that some of the speeds seem off.

Specs:
Asus Maximus VI Hero
i7-4790K
Gskill 2400 8GB x2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
EVGA GTX 770 4 GB

In CPU-Z, the memory is showing as 667 mhz, when it should be showing as 2400, no?

Probably there is something I am misunderstanding, could someone please tell me if I have the correct numbers?

Thanks for any help

Make sure you have the latest BIOS, then for full 2400, set the DRAM to XMP and select 2400, might also need to OC a bit, the Hero has preset autotuning to 4.2, 4.4 and 4.6, try at 4.2 initially

Yeah, you're running at the board's/CPU's default 1333MHZ now. (666.5 / 2)

OK, I went into the bios and found the setting ... I set it to 2400 mhz and now CPU-Z is reporting it as ~1200

I don't get why it divides it in half ... If I put 4 chips in will it be 1/4 the speed?

I couldn't find the xmp setting, do you know where it is under? Also, what does it do please?

CPUZ reads the actual memory speed. You always have to double that for dual channel mode. As long as you have both channels populated per pair, you are running at 1200MHZ x 2.

Correction - it reads the true freq of the sticks - DDR3 itself is DOUBLE data rate so to get 'effective' freq you take true x 2 (DOUBLE) to get effective or 1200 x 2 = 2400 - it has nothing to do with the number of channels ----------- if that was true the 4 of these sticks would be advertised as 4800 dram for a 2011 true quad channel :)  2400 (effective) runs as 2400 in single channel, dual, tri or quad channel mode

@ Tradesman1
You are correct of course. I always catch myself using the dual channel term when I mean double data rate. My bad. I honestly know better.

No worries, have seen you point it out correctly numerous times, but just wanted for OP to know, I do the same often thinking an answer to another thread while typing in another and my fingers just take over.... ;)
