I've been thinking of upgrading to a 1440p setup recently and I was wondering if I should get the r9 280x or shell out a few more bucks and get the r9 290. I want to a GPU that'll last me at least 2 years. Which of these is a more viable option for that?

one thing to consider when purchasing a GPU would be heat output and power consumption. If you chose to get the 290 it will use more power and output more heat what can be bad for your system. Now most gaming systems can handle that but its still something to consider. I would go with the 280x. I would because even though the 290 is a fair amount better at the rate we are seeing technology change i suspect it will still be obsolete in 2-3 years. The 280x is capable of playing 99.9% of modern games on that resolution (exception star citizen :p lol). both GPU's are good but for the price your spending now and assuming you will change it in the next 2-3 years i do not see the need for future proofing with a better gpu.
