Bad overclock? What happened?

Intel i5 4690K
Gigabyte z97 gaming 5
650 watt EVGA gold PSU
corsair h100i

I consider myself as a complete novice when it comes to overclocking.

Here is what I did.

Hit delete, entered BIOS

Hit f2, went to classic bios

hit f2 went to gigabyte tweaker

Set multiplier to 45 (4.5ghz)

Set Vcore to 1.2v

Set to those just to get a rough estimate on where my CPU is at

these are the only settings I chaged

But here is when I started getting confused:

Some of the settings didnt go through. I'd hit apply, and the settings wouldnt apply. Like only the Vcore would set, or only the multiplier would set.

Then when I thought they applied. I went to boot up to see if it would boot.

It didn't, so I thought "maybe this CPU isnt good overclocker"

So I set the multiplier to 43

Then reset and everything went haywire!

I couldnt get to the bios, it would freeze up at the splash screen.

I thought I'd pull out the CMOS battery, but then I got it to go into the bios, and I reset the settings.

I had to restart it 3 more times until it went to the desktop.

CPUZ says im at 1.15V and 3.8 - 3.9 GHZ (im pretty sure thats the turbo cuz the stock is 3.5 right)

SO, everything works fine now I guess, but what happened? Im a little clueless how to use the gigabyte easy tuner or whatever. Id much rather do it in normal Bios but it wont let me change anything in the normal bios.

I looked at guides and none helped me really.

Thanks.

Overclocking is serious, let this event be a wakeup call to you, you don't need to just look at the overclocking guides you need to study them until you understand what you are doing and then do it.

Overclocking on a little information is exactly what gets people into trouble that you may not be so lucky next time!

Too high of an applied voltage can destroy or cripple your CPU, so you need to know where those CPU boundaries are, or suffer the consequences.

Your setup can already do whatever you need and overclocking is just a plus, so learn first and then do.

The tweaker thing was in the bios.

edit: And it only displays Auto not says the voltage or clock.

thanks

I understand the basics to it. I only set it to those thigs to get a basic idea of where my CPU was at. I'd then decrease the voltage to a point where it was stable. My question was why it would freeze up and what exactly happened because I think 4.5 ghz is able to be sustained by 1.2 V. But I guess I'm wrong. Most guides said that was a good starting point.

Do you know of a good guide for me to study?

Thanks!

All CPUS of a given model are different and their capabilities are also

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/06/01/intel_haswell_i74770k_ipc_overclocking_review/6#.U9K6uvldUp-

could try same at 4.2 and see how that does, if OK and stable then up to 4.3

SO I went and set it to 4.0 at 1.2.

Works great. Running prime95 for 30 mins and we are at about 70-75C

Is it just me, or are those temps just a little high? I'm in a 3570k at almost 4.4GHz on a h55, 1.208v and maxed prime95 small fft after 1hr @74C.

With a h100i he shouldn't be hitting 70C at 1.2v 4.0GHz, should he? I've not seen the Haswell refresh yet, so no clue on thermals, is why I'm askin.

Im at 1.2V and 4.3ghz. currently im at 65-68C I guess that temp was off.

So, with a bigger, better CPU than me, same voltage, lower speed, and a cooler over twice the size of mine running 2 fans to my 1, and we get same temps? Something seems a little off to me. With that cooler at those speeds I'm used to seeing ppl in mid-50's to 60 range.

Sounds good, gaming is going to drive temps up some, might also check to see what it idles at with nothing running and how temps are just browsing the web....if they end up too high might want to pull the cooler and reapply the TC (thermal compound),, temps can be affected if you have too much or too little

I idle at about 35. I did touch the TC. only left a finger print/

Ambient is 27C, that cooler is capable at 88w of @8C over ambient or 35C. That's 100% cpu usage at stock speed, not speedstepped. At 150w its capable of 13C over ambient, so at @4.2GHZ your cooler is capable of running 100% at 40C or so. Granted prime95 runs 115% and Intel Burn in Test runs at 125% I believe, but still you should be seeing temps at 100% usage of 45-50. Since you are not, either your fingerprint is having consequences, or your case cooling solution needs some re-thought

I have a corsair 450D

2 140MM intakes
Top mounted h100i intake
1 120MM exhaust in back.

Im outa room for fans!

I dont think at 100% load, that I will be getting 40c temps lol.

He is at 61C on 3.7ghz.

Im only at 60-70 (avg 65)

I dont think my temps are too much of a prob, but if you guys think my paste is bad, then ill re do it.
