I don't know many things about PC computers yet so I'll try to make it as brief as possible.

My Windows 8.1 PC doesn't seem to support my 2560x1440 monitor. The option is there, but instead of applying the resolution to the entire monitor it simply squishes the image to fit a 1920x1440 screen, leaving a distorted image and ugly black bands on the sides.

I checked the driivers for the monitor and it gets picked up ad a "Generic PnP monitor".

Is there a way around this?

Solution
Hmm ok try switching the DVI port or using an HDMI cable (The two DVI ports on the GTX 780 are different on is DVI-I the other is DVI-D). An HDMI cable would be better at supporting that monitors resolutions though. Oh and your Video card actually has one HDMI and one Displayport if you look closely you will see a flat notch on one side of the plug that looks like an HDMI port. That port is commonly found on Professional Class Monitors.

What is your systems make/model or specs if you know them. What is the make and model of the monitor and how is it connected to your computer. (Describe the port used to connect if you don't know the name).

dxdiag tool:
OS: Windoes 8.1 64-bit
Model: MSI-7760
Processor: Intel i7-4930K CPU @ 3.40GHz (12 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Display: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780
Current Display Mode(?): 1920x1440 (32-bit)(59Hz) -- I set it to that to avoid squishing the image.
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor

Monitor model: Yamakasi ds270

Edit: IT's plugged into the DVI port on the graphics card, it looks like. I think. The bar it's plugged into also has two outputs for HDMI.

The control panel scales it by squishing the image, not filling the screen.

The monitor's scaling settings are greyed out and it skips over that section of the menu completely.
