4790K what max oc I can get?

Hi all,

I've just finished building my new Gaming PC. So far it looks everything good.
Can anyone tell me how to OC my cpu? And what is the maxmum CPU clock I could get, and what is the max temp for the cpu it can handle?

I have i7 4790K
CPU cooler is H100i
Mobo GA-Sniper-G1 Z97

The thing holding you back is your mobo. It is low end of the Z97s. I'd expect, with a good chip, a 4.4GHz with the H100i

Every processor is different. Don't even attempt an OC until you check out a few tutorials. The max safe temp is around 80C, preferably no higher. You have good cooling so you should be able to squeeze out a good OC. just don't try anything until you know how. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1722630/intel-god-quick-dirty-guide-4ghz-haswell.html is a good start

the average people seem to OC to is 4.5 - 4.7 depend on the chip and cooler.

I'm doing 4.5 on air now .. I'm testing in OCCT as I'm checking out forum

The Asus Maximus Hero is a better mobo. That should allow you to get closer to 4.8GHz. It has a 8+0 power phase, which makes it better for overclocking than the Sniper with a 4+0 power phase. Here is where you can compare quality of components:

Audio wise this motherboard the OP has chosen has some Killer on board sound, so Gaming should be fantastic, but overclocking can literally be done with any overclocking capable motherboard to some degree, and this motherboard is overclocking capable.

So the OP needs to study some guides to learn how to overclock the CPU, and then worry about the motherboards limitations, if it is not satisfactory as far as the end results go.

The OP suggested the Asus Hero mobo, otherwise we would have just stuck to what we think the oc would be on the G1. If OP hasn't bought a mobo yet then I'd recommend the Hero instead.

I agree with this 100%. Don't bother selling what you bought. It's a great motherboard and you would only get a couple hundred MHz extra, if anything at all with a more expensive one.

If I bought a H100i I'd expect to use it to overclock my CPU, but since you are using a low end mobo..don't expect much if anything beyond stock. Should have gotten a higher end mobo to overclock the i7.
