Which of these graphics cards is better for gaming?

XFX Radeon R9 290 4GB Double Dissipation Video Card

or

EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB Superclocked ACX Video Card

I heard somewhere that I don't need 4gb of video RAM since I will only be using 1 monitor. Both of these cards are very close to each other in price.

You should go for the r9 290, its performance is close to the 780 and the 4gb of vram will help you prepare for the future better, like multiple monitor setup or higher res screens

The R9 290 performs better but costs more than a 2gb gtx770.

2gb vram is fine for one 1080p monitor.

The 290 is the next level up compared to the 770. You don't need 4gb vram, although some games (watch dogs, wolfenstien) are locking some settings to gpu's with 3gb vram minimum.
