Hi guyys, the long awaited Formula VII is finally out!!! (I am a huge fan of the VI by the way) I got a second hand Rampage Black edition a few months ago. The question now is whether or not I should get the Formula VII and use that as my main gaming rig.

Thank you for your quick response. So you mean the Formula Vii would have the m.2 support which to my knowledge is basically a pair of SSDs in raid zero? Does that also mean my gaming experience will be better?

I am hoping to run a 3 way Nvidia surround for gaming and on top have a 27 inch for watching movie or show in-game maps and so on. I guess I am asking because I use to own the formula vi and the difference between a x79 and z87 is that the CPU has less core, less hyper threads for the ram, slower PCI-e slots when you go 2 or more sli. So I think x79 should definitely be better than a Z87, but with the introduction of the Z97 basically the same as the Z87 but has superior storage technology.

yeah I've just looked at both of these boards and the Rampage has 4 x sata 3gb/s and 6 x sata 6gb/s, whereas the formula has dual sata express, 10 x sata 6gb/s and also has m.2 support, I wouldn't recommend you getting a new board as the rampage will do you just fine as it supports 4 way SLI , so unless you have lots of ssd's, you won't need to upgrade really, both are great boards

well, LGA 2011 has a lot more memory lanes than LGA 1150, so the X79 system will be better for multiple graphics cards in certain configurations. Your gaming rig is perfect, no need to re-work it for a lower ranked socket, the i7 4930k is a great cpu and soon it'll be a far better CPU than the current Intel i7 Quad-Cores.

That said, LGA 2011 X79 boards are quite old, and are going to be replaced soon with X99 boards with DDR4 ram slots, the first of it's kind. It'll cost a lot but enthusiasts have money. That is why the SATA port amounts and other features are lacking on intel's flagship socket.

Thank you again for your reply. I guess I purposely left out that I was going to build two systems, so ppl can give me their thoughts on the pros and cons of the two boards. So instead of starting a new post I will just continue my questions.

I am actually thinking of building two systems since the computer desk I got can fit two mobos in it and I guess the second system I would use it to watch movies, surf the net or even use it as a video/music server. (I actually have 2 NASs so...)

I also have a i7-4770K from my formula Vi board that I can use, all other components are compatible with both boards. So would this change your mind? Also in this case which mobo should I use for gaming?

One last thought. I mean instead of getting the new formula VII ($369 w/game adn $330I without game) I could get other z97 boards. But I am sure the price will be very similar. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON OTHER Z97 BOARDS?

So maybe I should use the x79 board for gaming and get a z97 board with some cool accessories. i am sure the Asus Premium line of boards would be the way to go if I don't go with the formula.
