Will an ethernet cable increase my internet speed?

Hello everyone! I have been wondering if I can increase my internet speed (the speed at which things load, my ping on games becomes lower e.t.c) by installing an Ethernet cable from my router to my PC. My PC is upstairs and only receives between 2-3 bars of signal according to windows (I am using a wireless network adapter). My speedtest.net results are 5.2mbps download and 360kb/s upload. Unfortunately, I currently only get around 300-800kb/s whilst downloading. My ping on games fluctuates enormously depending on how many users are using the internet. I can get a ping of less than 50, whereas other times my ping can jump as high as 999 (this is battlefield 4 by the way). Something my family was wondering before I installed a cable was, would there internet performance get any worse than it is now if I installed a cable compared to before? I live in the countryside in Wales so you can probably imagine why the internet is so slow compared to everywhere else :) Thank you for your assistance.

A ethernet cable will always give you the best speeds your internet connection can deliver. Still if your internet is 5m down and 360k up and you already get that on wireless a ethernet cable can not improve that. You will only get what you pay your ISP for at the very maximum.

The download speeds of 300-800 if you are actually meaning BYTES/sec that is 2.4m-6.4m bits/sec which is what you see on the speed test.

The ping time should be much more consistent with ethernet since you seldom get any packet loss or delays on a cable and you can get huge amounts on wireless.

There performance should not be worse JUST because you installed a ethernet cable. Since the ethernet cable lets you get fewer errors in the transmissions you can get more data download. If you do not increase your usage then it will make no difference but if you use more then they will likely get less. It really depends how often you hit the limit of bandwidth you buy from your ISP. If the use wireless you moving to cable should help them because there is one less device competing for the radio bandwidth.

Thanks for all the responses. It is 300 Kilobytes per second to 800. I rarely upload so I don't really care about that. I do not get 5mbps download. Would an Ethernet cable offer this? If it didn't, what speed would you estimate that I would actually get? I don't want to have to set the whole system up and then find that the benefits are insignificant.

Oh ok. I understand now. 300 x 8 = 2.4 & 800 x 8 = 6.4 = 2.4-6.4 mbps. That makes sense. Thanks for the assistance. I think I will get an Ethernet cable to increase the consistency of my ping. Thanks :)
