I have wi-fi data card (Huawei E8231) which is working if used with the USB port of Desk-Top. How to configure it to use it as a wi-fi device? and what other settings required if I have to use it with USB power source?

You will have to read the manual for details if you wish to change it but devices like these generally run wifi by default. There should be a ssid and key on the unit or on a card in the box. This is pretty much the same as the broadband hotspot devices they sell that are run on batteries. Almost all have the wifi enabled by default....but I have not used this one so it could be different. This is the main reason you buy this unit over the simple modem models so you would think it would be very easy to use. Hard to say I am to lazy to go find and read the manual for you.
