Second short answer - it's gonna cost at least $700 (on eBay anyway). So you might as well save for a new laptop.

Wrong, there are laptops that have upgradable gpu's. Alienware and Sager for example have laptops with MXM ports that allow for GPU upgrades.

Ebay is about your best chance of finding one. MXM cards are hard to find and expensive. Also depending on what card you have now you may also have to buy a heatsink, and thermal pads for the vram.

This because you laptop more than likely didn't have an MXM port and the gt610m was soldered to the motherboard. The Alienware M18x has 2 MXM ports and supports Crossfire and SLI.

It was more of a quick solution because whilst some laptops allow you to upgrade the GPU, it's rarely ever worth the hassle/money and you're almost always better off getting a new laptop. Even if you did upgrade the GPU, the rest of your laptop would be older and not good enough to support the new GPU.
