Strange Freezing Problem

My current build seems to have a strange freezing problem that i'm having trouble diagnosing. The PC itself boots fine without any problems and can surf the web and playback videos without any trouble at all and will stay up and running until I choose to switch it off or reboot. However if I try to download any game's from Steam such as Assassins Creed or even another game from a completely different place like World Of Warcraft then the PC freezes and only a hard reboot brings it back. Sometimes it can be only a few seconds after launching the download software sometimes a few minutes. I have been able to download files from the net without a hitch (granted they were nowhere near the 20gig of data I was trying to download via Steam).

  • I have tested the RAM from another computer that works fine on a previous build, in this build to no avail and run windows memory diagnostic on the current set which found no issues at all.

I have tried 3 separate storage drives as I thought maybe the HDD might be dodgy but no luck and run a dskchk on them with no negative results.

The CPU is running at a consistent 16-20°C when idle. So I don't think overheating is the problem.

The graphics card as far as i'm aware seems to be working fine and all the drivers are up to date.

I have tried it with an external ethernet socket to rule out a faulty ethernet socket potentially being the culprit.

I have re-installed windows 3 times to rule out a software problem even using a different disk once to check the software wasn't faulty on that particular copy and a copy of Linux to double check.

I have also tried two different power-supplies

Basically the computer runs fine until I try to download any big game files from Steam, Blizzard etc.... and then only a hard reboot will bring it back.

Anyone got any ideas?
Sorry if I posted this in the wrong area of the forum. Thanks for reading.

Afraid not.
Since my post I took everything out re-seated everything but still to no avail. I then went into the BIOS and reset everything to default. Now resetting the BIOS didn't fix the freezing problem however it did improve it a lot. The I managed to DL one game file fine and even managed to run said online game for 2 hours with the no problem at all (until I chose to shut the PC down). However the PC does still freeze when downloading game files (albeit a lot longer before said freeze occurs) but after it has finished, the game either runs indefinitely or a very long time before freezing. I have also encountered a freeze just as windows finished booting which I hadn't encountered before however a reboot fixed that and it hasn't happened on boot since.

The problem is still persisting but its now noticeably better than it was before. I'm guessing there's a bad setting somewhere in the BIOS?

Yes, You need to update your bios, (go to your motherboard makers site and download the latest bios update) Iv heard that its best to put the bios update on a usb stick and run it when windows isn't running, although its perfectly fine to do in windows.

I had already attempted to update the BIOS however this was prior to reseating and resetting the BIOS. I shall reattempt it tonight and let you know how it goes.

Sorry for such a late update on this issue. Anyway I updated the BIOS and this still has not fixed the problem. The PC will still randomly freeze however it is doing it far less frequently but it is still a guaranteed freeze after about 5-10mins if I launch and download something from Steam. I'm starting to run low on ideas. Any suggestions?
