I was using my computer as normal, windows applications then stopped responding (explorer, start menu). Skype, Mozilla etc were working as normal, but I decided to restart the computer. Although the system components seemed to start up fine, the monitor wasn't showing any output.

Opened up the computer to check if anything is off during start up; GPU lights turn on and its fan spin, CPU fan spins. I tried using different pcie slots for the GPU, tried a different GPU altogether. I do have an external motherboard mic, not sure if it works, I've taken out all the ram and the mic doesn't make any error beeps. Tried ram in different orientations. Held the power button to discharge any capacitances. Shorted the CMOS thing (I think, foil conducts right?) Still no output on the monitor.

I'm thinking it might be the motherboard, but I don't have another one to test.

Any other ideas?

then the only way to test is to 1-put the gpu in another computer to see if it works 2-maybe its the monitor? get another monitor to test

if u can't enter BIOS with no drives connected, and no peripherals, after clearing CMOS, then its either the gpu, power supply or motherboard

does the motherboard have on-board graphics? if so, have you checked if you get output to the monitor? it sounds like you should remove all usb except keybd and mouse, all drives and make sure all power cables are tight and secure in the slots, and see if you can enter BIOS - you need to breadboard and go from there

AW damn this stupid tablet, how do I remove the best answer? I accidently pressed the button. Also, hoew do i reply to people directly? Cos I only see the "post a solution" button.

Anyway, I did unplug all peripherals. I don't have an onboard GPU.
