Purchased a New laptop w/win 8.1

Hello everyone,
I bought a new asus laptop computer last night, and am having trouble getting the computer configured to use the router/internet. The router is netgear, and is 4 years old, could this be the problem? Is there anyone having similar problems? Is there a fix for the router? Can anyone help me here?

Yes, I believe the wireless is where I am having problems, however I can see the network bar strength indicator and along with that it says 'limited' below that indicator. Apparently I have wireless connection but not internet connection, although my other computer/devices are all working fine, while the new asus does not.

The problem was with my modem/router. Outdated after only 4 years, how depressing! Anyway, I had to go and pick up a new router and also a new modem, as they are no longer available as one unit. Frustrating when I certainly did not thing that there was anything wrong with the equipment that I had. Anyway, I don't want to get long winded here. thanks redo_43 for your interest and support.
