OEM motherbd often are coded in their bios to only work with a handful of processors. While they seem to be getting away from this practice, it was pretty prevalent in the older boards.

Manufacturers almost always have a CPU compatibility list on their support website for that board. Its best to check there and be sure what you want will work.
