Hey, I got a WD Black 3TB and first it wasn't doing anything strange really. It grinded a bit much first but then not really anymore but now when I'm downloading or something it just grinds the whole time and sometimes really hard, I didn't have this problem yesterday. And also when opening a folder like downloads with a size of 6GB and 105 items sometimes it takes more than 5 seconds to show me the files. I know this isn't the first time someone asked about this but I don't want to take any chances since I have some bad luck until now with a GPU with coil whine I had to send back, replacing the thermal paste because I screwed up so I wouldn't be surprised if this one is also broken.

Could this still be the case if the tests like CrystalDiskInfo and HD Tune Pro say everything is fine? Also I don't know what's up with the downloads folder being so slow. It takes almost 10 seconds to load it, that's ridiculous. But opening every other folder like my folder of backgrounds with 222 items takes like a second or less.

Edit: I fixed the downloads folder issue. It's set to optimized for pictures and I changed it to General Items and now that's loading fine. I also heard the Black is just a really loud drive but what do you think?

You would here a little noise , but my 2 Blacks aren't that loud .

If it's running fine and the grinding noise isn't that bad go with it.

I think I would not risk it get some piece of mind and rma the drives .. I use black in all my builds and none make noise like grinding maybe a slight whirllll when they spin up.. wd has been easy to deal with and a quick e-mail to them will more than likely result in a free direct replacement from them

Okay before I try and contact WD here's a video of my PC (where I found another problem, check the CPU section for my other problem if you're interested) when HD Tune Pro is doing a Error Scan and then when it gets quieter that's when it's Idle:

to me a hard drive should be smooth and quite almost invisible now I'm not there for hands on but any odd noise over vibration concerns me cause its not normal so why risk a copy of window and lets say 6 months of data then the drive fails because there was a issue the started causing the noise or what ever but then it may last 10 years or 10 weeks .. a lot rides on your drive and if I think something don't seem right with it its gone [opinion]

last time I had a bad drive they were easy to work with and replaced the drive they will want your old one inspect it and more than likely ship you a new one. I remember it being little fuss..

Yes they have great support. I called them and he asked for my name and serial number and then I explained what the problem was. He just told me if the drive is making any unusual sounds it could die now or in a few months. Back up your data and then contact us so we can take further action and replace the drive as soon as possible.
