Hello. I'm not sure if this is the correct site to ask this question, but here it goes. My Steam download speed is far too low for what I should be getting. I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to networking but from what I understand, I should be getting at least 6 MB/s on Steam downloads. Instead I get a maximum of around 800 KB/s. Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What does your ISP provide?

Remember that 1MB/s = 8Mb/s.

Your download speed is 6 megabits per second. ISPs do not rate in megaBYTES per second. 800KB/s = 6.4Mb/s. nothing is wrong you simply don't understand units of measurement or math.

I believe that my isp provides 50 Mb/s. Sorry as I've said I'm not very tech savvy.

OK. In that case, can you run a speedtest, and post it here?

I'm guessing that the steam servers are pretty heavily loaded, or your ISP isn't peered well.

then you are limited by the max download speed of the server. and you should not care

The speed test tells me this: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3650363032
This is much lower than I expected and I may have to contact my Internet provider instead.

You could try changing the download region for steam in steam settings>downloads, every region change requires steam to be restarted so it might take some time to find a better server.
Make sure you have no download restrictions set as well.

I have tried this, changing it from Seattle to Miami to Hong Kong to Luxembourg, but still no luck. Thank you though.

800k is damn good for a 6MB bandwidth provider.

From my speedtest, I'm going to assume that the fault is on the Internet provider, I'm contacting them now. Thank you.
