I have an Acer 5620 , the battery is dead but it works on mains power just fine . Just been to a shop where we tried 2 batteries . One , the computer registered as having 33% charge, the other 35% and and computer registered charging . Problem is when we pulled the plug , the computer died . Any thoughts ?

Dodgy batteries - leave them alone. Buy new battery direct from Acer only - cost more but they are guaranteed and won't harm your laptop.

Third-party cheap alternatives have been known to get so hot that smoke was seen coming from the battery compartment (I kid you not). In several other cases, the laptop was damaged internally. No, I don't work for Acer, I just want others to avoid what I've seen with my own eyes.

Why are batteries so expensive ? The cost of an Acer battery is about half the value of the whole laptop ( + have to get mail order , no stocks in dealer ) . No motorist in his right mind would spend this much to replace a battery .
