Hello guys,

So basically, I'm a total noob with computers and their parts, I understand a SMALL bit, but need to turn to you experts for help every now and then when I need new parts :D

So basically, I didn't realize until 2 weeks after, but my cooling system (air cooled), broke, and now I'm in need of a new cooling system along with a new CPU (not needed but yolo).

So my current build is below:
i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz
Corsair Gold Series 850watt PSU
EVGA GTX 780
8GB Ram
64 Bit

Basically, I'm wanting to get an i7-4770k CPU, I think my power supply is good enough, but just making sure with you guys, will my setup be able to handle/run that CPU fine?

If so, what air cooling system do you guys recommend to cool this bad boy? Help would be MUCH appreciated, thanks! :D

Ok, figure it this way. A CPU cooler can only cool so much, its limited by the area of the fins. Bigger fins means more area the fan can blow over, so better capability to cool. Air coolers generally come in 3 approximate sizes, stock cooler size, tower size and large tower, or pathetic, good and great. The Hyper212 EVO is a tower, so has good cooling capability, but its also a really efficient design, so is about the best CPU cooler in its class, especially when you take its low price into consideration. The Noctua NH-d14 is a large tower and has great cooling potential, as does the phanteks, but they both have excellent designs, so, again, they are in the top of their class, the NH-d15 uses a slightly larger fan than the d14 and is...
If I were you, I would stick with my motherboard and purchase a better 1155 CPU.

As for cooling, Cooler Master Hyper Evo or a Zalman CNPS9900 (watch out for compatibility and models) will do the trick. Anything above 35$ is a waste of money that should be invested somewhere else.

Try to find a good deal and jump on it.

to follow the familys correctly, you could get i5-3570k or i7-3770k which are LGA 1155, unless you plan to switch the z77 board for a z87/97 in which case you could use a i7-4770k or even opt for a i7-4790k which are LGA 1150.

The CPU cooler will depend on any OC and just how much and what you prefer. For stock to mid OC, a corsair h60 liquid or Coolermaster Hyper212 Evo is recommended. For mid to high OC look towards the Noctua NH-D14 or Phanteks PH-TC14PE for air and for liquid the Corsair h80i or h100i. All of the above depend on case size, some cases are too thin for larger towers, and some cases simply don't have the fan slots available for a h100i. These are all excellent coolers, but are more representative of the designs too, there are other coolers out there just as good if not better, again, its personal choice.

Okay, I'm guessing the i7-3770k is the better performing CPU? It's around $100 more, so I'm assuming it's better? Again, no idea, just guessing. So I will most likely go with that.

Although I didn't understand one bit of what u said about the cooling haha. Sorry I really don't understand computer parts, so I didn't really interpret what you said.

This is my case: CoolerMaster Elite 431 Mid-Tower Gaming Case

Do you mind recommending me a really good air cooled cooling system? I'm afraid to go water cooled, so I'd like to stick with air, but have no idea what will fit my case and what is good enough to cool that CPU and my GPU. I also have no idea which ones are good and still compatible with my current build, so it would mean the world if someone told me what would be good to get. Thanks again, much appreciated!

The CM 431 Elite has a maximum CPU cooler clearance of 160mm.
The CM Hyper212 EVO is 160mm tall.
The Noctua NH-D14 is 160mm tall.
The Noctua NH-C14 is 130mm tall, because it sits horizontal to the board, not vertical like most towers.

If you plan on no overclock to somewhere around 4.3GHz, then all you need coolingwise is the smaller 212 EVO. If you plan on an OC of 4.2 or greater, you'll need the larger cooling capabilities of a large tower like a nh-d14 or nh-c14.

Lastly, that's all a matter of need, as in minimum recommended. There is no such thing as 'over cooling' when it comes to CPUs, that said, 'under cooling', as you recently discovered, is a major no-no, especially if you don't want to keep replacing equipment.

Okay so what I'm seeing here is that the noctua nh-d15 is the best fan I can get and will be compatible and fit my needs? A clarification on that would be awesome, thanks guys I really appreciate it.
