so i'm just wondering can i get a different set of rams beside from the one i already have? i wanted to run a 32gb i currently have 16gb of corsair vengeance LP. also does it make that much of a difference in gaming? is it even necessary?

p.s my MOB can take up to 64 gb of ram

Solution
In order to create quad channel you would need 4 RAMs of same capacity and insert them in the same colored slots. Not that every slot needs to be populated.
No, going to 32GB of RAM will not make a significant difference in performance in gaming. Even 16GB is overkill right now.

As for the original question, yes you can mix-and-match RAM, but it's not recommended. The computer may start and run just fine, but it's also a good possibility that it won't start at all. If you're going to add more RAM, it should be at least the same make and model that you currently have.

For gaming? Anything over 8GB is a waste. Now if you use the computer for photo and video editing or run VMs then more RAM will help.

there is no need for more than 16 gigs and you will not see any improvement.

can you mix ram sticks?

yes you can but there is no guarantee that they will work together, they should but that is not a guarantee.

you would be better off selling your old GPU and putting that money plus the ram investment towards a new GPU or CPU if needed

16 gigs is plenty even if you are doing graphics work along with gaming. So don't go for 32 gigs. Seems like you've x79 based mobo which supports quad channel RAM architecture. I hope you have 4x4 Gigs of RAM to take advantage of quad channel.

Coming to second part, yes you can mix and match different RAMs though it is NOT RECOMMENDED at all due to incompatibility issues. you may have to manipulate DRAM voltage to get different RAMs work together. Better save that hassle and don't go for different RAMs.

i'm only using 4 of the 8 slots on my ram socket, is that what you mean by "I hope you have 4x4 Gigs of RAM to take advantage of quad channel" i have 4 gb on each sticks.

Yes you picked me right.

well if you did go for 32 gigs of ram them you could make a ram disk an that can really improve the loading speed of programs and such. I keep a ram disk for all of my browsers since i often keep 50 tabs open and when I reopen the browser it will load everything from cache at a much faster pace.

but really there is no sence in it. RAM was allot cheaper when i bought it.
