So i'm doing some research on the old, new and newest type of pata drives. I'm currently doing studies for my ceritifications but i feel that when it comes to hard drives such as this, i should have a GOOD understanding of not just the new stuff but the OLD stuff too. I'm sure i'll see the old stuff . I seen where some say the old connectors are white with 40 pin and the new are blue with 80 pin, as well as some voltage differences too. However when i googled connector and connections, i see NEW white, black and blue connectors. So i'm abit confused. Are my books just old or is something going on that i have failed to see? And am i correct to feel i should have a good , clear understanding of VOLTAGES and Connectors to know applications that best fit each situation.

Knowing old hardware is always a good idea if you want to be a tech. But keep in mind, every manufacture created its own color coding for cables. The number of wires 40/80 was relevant to the speed of the drives, so that would be consistent as would the shape/size/positioning of the connector. But size, shape of the cable itself (ribbon vs rounded), color, that was all up in the air.

Voltages for molex power connectors would be the same, but even there the color coding of the cables in the power connector would sometimes be different (Sony was a bitch with this). The keying of the molex plug would stay the same however.

ahh ok do being so much is "up to the manufacture" i'll just focus on the generals of each. And yes i am not sure where i am going but i'm working on my A+ right now and headed to Networking + next. Self schooling with books and online information. As i said i dont know where i'm going with this but i enjoy it so its become a passion with me over the last year or so, have already built 17 desktops for friends lol. Ok thanks for the input, and expect to see more of me here .
