So I asked yesterday if there was a clear winner between a GTX 660 and an R9 270X. Several people told me that the 270X was the better option, with one person saying the difference was not that large.
I have heard an R9 270 can be overclocked to match the 270X and was wondering how simple this would be, what a difference it can make, and if it could heavily affect the lifespan of the card? I'm just trying to get the best bang for my buck, as I was looking at the sub-$150 660 and the 270 is about the same price with the potential of matching the 270X

Lifespan difference is negligible.
Yes you can overclock the R9 270 to the speed of a R9 270X via AMD Catalyst or MSI Afterburner.

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-270X-vs-GeForce-GTX-6... - the 270x is a bit better.

You can OC a 270 or a 660 to match a reference speed 270x. But you can OC a reference 270x to match a R9 280 and so on.

So is the 270x worth it for the extra$30-$40 over the 270 or 660? Or should I go the cheap route and just overclock? I'm aiming for 1080p 60fps gaming for last gen games(GTA IV Icenhancer, Arkham games/spiderman, sleeping dogs, tomb raider, etc.)

Yes - I'd rather have a graphics card that I don't need to overclock.
