I was putting together a build at PCPartPicker (MY first PC I am going to build) and I saw the AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core ($174.98) and the Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($214.99).

I was originally going to choose the i5 but then I noticed the AMD CPU with .5ghz more with 2 more cores for less money. I Would like to know which one is the best so I make the right choice.

Thanks

Is this for gaming? If it is the i5 hands down. Superior single core performance which is what matters in gaming. But if you're streaming, recording, etc then the 8350s cores will help with that.

Yes, it is for gaming. So the i5 is a gaming CPU and the AMD is a streaming CPU?

The 8350 is overclockable, and should easily reach 4.5GHz or better with the right cooling, so single thread performance vrs the 4690 will be close, aswell as having all the benefits of AMD's 8 core architecture over the Intel's 4 cores. That said though, the 4690 is a Haswell refresh CPU, so paired with a good Z97 motherboard, will be easy to upgrade to the outcoming Broadwell CPUs evenan unlocked K CPU which can be overclocked. The 8350, while an already excellent CPU, is a dead end, its already the best in its class, and has no upgrade path. As far as knowledge is available, the AM3+ boards have reached the end.

So your choice, for plug and play - i5 4690, for tinkerability - fx 8350, for some real muscle in the future - i5 4690 + Z97.

You could get the k version for a bit more

The i5 will run cooler and perform better in single core and threaded applications unless they support more than 4 threads, in which case you may see a tiny improvement with the AMD CPU. The i5 would also draw less power, and as has already been mentioned will run games smoother. :)

So what if I want to play games and stream/record just for the heck of it while im at it?

Depends on what you're playing. Most games tend to not use more than 1-2 cores and in that case you'd go with the intel. Some games (like bf4) will use more than that in which case the 8350 would be slightly better. I'd get the i5 as it has better upgradability with. 8350 pretty much the end of the line for fx
