Hi all,

I'll be moving into my first apartment this September or October. I was looking at different wireless routers and was hoping to get some recommendations from the community. Currently I'm looking mostly at the Asus brands, but I'd be open to any and all suggestions.

I know some models offer built-in VPNs and features such as traffic shaping and prioritization. I'd definitely be interested in these types of features. I know there are a wide-selection of routers to choose from, so any suggestions or starting places would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you, as always, for your time and feedback!

If you are looking for the most capable wireless control look at the NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk. It has all of the features that you could possibly want plus it is supported in the open source community for different firmware.

One of the technologies that NETGEAR has is called Explicit Beamforming. This technology shapes the wireless signal to maximize performance based on device. It works with N devices as well as AC. AC routers have Implicit Beamforming (part of the AC standard) but that only works with AC clients.

The R7000 will be the only router you will need for many years to come.

If you want to save a little money look at the NETGEAR R6250. Has Beamforming and is about 25% less. Doesnt have the range of the R7000 nor VPN but for an apartment will be more than adequate.
