Hi. I have a Dell desktop that desperately needs more than the 4 Gb of memory it has. Problem is that is the max for the motherboard. I am comfortable tearing down my PC, so what steps do I need to take to find a motherboard/CPU and RAM that will fit? Are there standards out there that help in selection? I've already upgraded the power supply, the network and graphic cards and the hard disk. The computer is a Dell Inspiron D531. Apparently what is already in there is an ASUS M2N61-AX. Thanks,

Rick

Given that this is a 7 year old Dell, and you've already changed the PSU, GPU, etc....and now looking for a new motherboard and RAM....
You will also need a new CPU. Any motherboard that will accept that existing Athlon CPU won't be any better than what you currently have.

So, everything new. You might as well get a new case.

Okay. How do I know if a given case fits a given motherboard fits a given CPU? Would you have a recommendation as to the components I would buy and where? I'm not really sure where to start.

Thanks.
