Question for future RAM upgrades

I am thinking about upgrading my gaming build in the future, and have a question about memory. I currently have an older board that is optimized for triple channel architecture. To go with it I have 3 sticks of 4GB DDR3 Corsair RAM.

I want to upgrade my CPU, which means moving from the ol' 1366 socket to the 1150 socket. Since the boards I've been looking at are optimized for more "even numbers" of dimms, I was wondering: Can I simply add an identical 4GB RAM stick to my existing 12GB collection with no problems? I'm obviously no professional on memory, and I want to make sure I'm not screwing anything up.

Thanks :)

Solution

You will have NO idea if the RAM you picked out is the same revision or something like that as your old RAM. I would suggest this:http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f31600c11d16gisl for dual-channel 2x8 GB, this:http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f312800cl10q32gbxl for quad-channel 4x8 GB or this:http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f32133c9d8gxl...

You don't want to do that:(. You have NO idea if the new stick will be compatible or not. I suggest selling your 3 sticks of RAM and getting some in dual or quad channel.

Even if it's the same Corsair XMS3 4GB 1333MHz stick? Like are individual sticks of RAM manufactured to be used with a certain number of others? Sorry I am a complete noob with this stuff
