SSD Migration Through Partitioning?

I'm thinking about moving to a 128GB SSD, and have a question regarding the migration process. Could I partition out part of my current 1TB drive, move excess files there, then clone the primary Windows partition to the SSD? Would it be any easier than using a backup drive?

Solution
The problem with this is....the primary Windows partition is not the only thing that needs to be migrated. You also need to migrate the System Reserved partition. This contains the boot info.

99% of the time, I recommend a fresh install on a new SSD as the best, fastest, easiest option.

Thanks, just the answer I was looking for. Easy, and I'll have a clean slate. I just wasn't sure if I would have to clone the entire disk or just the core windows files.
