Hello,

I am using my old laptop as my htpc for my tv. I have noticed some lag when playing 1080p movies. It often happens when the camera is sweeping through a long distance. Do you think that my processor is to weak? It is an i3 2.13 ghz with a Radeon 5650 from 2010. Or can it possibly be my tv that is not up to the task? It is a full hd TV but is 3 years old now.

I am unable to update graphics driver since that option is locked on my sony vaio. I have tried using vlc. Mpc hc and a few more softwares. What do you think is the problem?

Well, its pretty easy to see if your CPU is maxing out and causing the lag.
You can view it in real time using the Task Manager to see if its pegged at 100% or use a program like Speccy (http://www.piriform.com/speccy) or HWMonitor to graph it for you and see if your CPU or GPU is being pegged.

There are lots of other things that can cause the perceived lag. Screen tearing can be a major culprit.
There are allot of forumns that delve into this.http://www.overclock.net/t/1403751/screen-tearing-with-vlc-video-playback

The CPU and Tv are more than adequate. When playing movies off of my HDD I experience this as well. I wrote it up to the disk drive being 3 years old. If you are playing off of optical media it could be a dirty read head. Also it could be a problem with RAM maxing out. Open taskmgr.exe next time that you play a DVD go to the performance tab and the bottom side scrolling graph is you RAM watch and notice if it is maxing out during graphically intensive portions of the movie. Also updating your GPU drivers might help.

I will look up the ram. I have 4 gigs on the laptop. The gpu drivers are impossible to update. It's driving me crazy. I think that Sony have locked that option. The only way is to somehow use modded drivers.
