Can my laptop fully use a SSD?

I just got a Asus Rog G750jm laptop. I love everything about it except the slow 5400rpm hdd it came with. So I am wanting to use the 2nd bay for a SSD. Now before I made this decision I wanted to know if their was a Msata slot. And I checked around but couldn't find anything that said yes or no. So I just decided to open the laptop up myself. Once I got it open and could look around the motherboard I didn't see one anywheres. But one thing I did notice is. The cable that ran from the hdd bays to the motherboard was just 1 cable. And the port it plugged into said hdd on the motherboard. And right above it was another port tjat looked identical but it was marked ssd.

So I am wondering, if I was to put a ssd into the 2nd bay. Would it not be able to run at it's full speed? I am looking at getting a 1TB Evo

That's the reason why I recommend against store bought lappies and recommend custom builds. An inexpensive upgrade would have eliminated that problem.

We have two identical laptops here with one difference:

1. Samsung 840 Pro + 7200 rpm HD
2. Seagate 7200 rpm SSHD.

No one can tell the difference using either AutoCAD or Gaming. I did measure a 15.6 second boot time with the SSD and a 16.5 second boot time on the SSHD but w/o the stop watch I can't tell the difference.

So one alternate to consider if the cost of the 1 TB SSHD is a bit daunting might be:

1. Replace the HD w/ Seagate 500 GB 7200 rpm Model ST500LM02 or 750 GB ST750LX003

2. Use the existing 500 GB as auxillary storage in one of these:

When I get home. I will pull out the ssd in my desktop and put it in and see how quick it is to test. If it is slower then my desktop then I will just get a 750gb 7200rpm wd black.

But I didn't get a custom built one because they all had bad cooling designs except alienware which js over priced. When looking at reviews from the digital storm or origin pc the gpus in all teat got up in the 80s which causes them to throttle. The only one qhich kept the gpu cool was the alienware 17 and I just didn't want to drop that much money into a laptop I don't get to use a whole lot while I am on the road working.

Don't expect the SSD w/ Windows and drivers from your desktop build to boot on the lappie. You'll need to format and reinstall OS.

Alienware quality has gone way south since the company that made them sold to Dell. Before that, when they garnered the quality / performance reputation, they were built on Clevo chassis. Of course you can still buy from boutique vendors (i.e Falcon Northwest and WidowPC) for big bucks or you can buy the exact same thing minus fancy paint job from a Clevo distributor for about 2/3 the price.

CLEVO is a large Taiwanese computer company specializing in laptops. While the Clevo brand name is perhaps not widely known, their products are re-branded and sold by known boutique brand OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)… notably Sager, VoodooPC, Falcon Northwest, Eurocom, etc. They are also considered (by whoever knows about notebooks) to design and manufacturer the best of the best notebooks in terms of superior build quality and innovative designs.

The cooling designs on the Clevo chassis are superior to what Asus offers. Asus lappies perform very well if you get it with the default or "base" CPU but tends to come up short if you order lappie with a CPU upgrade.

The WB Black sits in 13th place on THGs HD charts .... the Seagate SSHD sits in 1st.

Now are you talking about the hdd that uses the ssd side as cache to speed it up or the hdd that has a small ssd in it? Because if it is the one with like a 128gb ssd and 1tb hdd then I am still getting a slow hdd and I will easily have that 128gb ssd filled up like nothing. And my laptop uses the i7 4700hq or mq idk which. With the gtx 860m maxwell version. So I get great temps. Plus the 4700 pulls ahead of the 860m

Also I really pref wd. I have always used them and trusted them.

I just want to know if my laptop will be able to use a ssd to it's full speed or not.

And if not. How much faster would it still be ovet a 7200rpm hdd? Because my plan is to have the 1TB ssd for os and games for the speed. And get the 2tb spinpoint m9 for my movies and music and video. Once the spinpoint m9 gets sold as a barebone and not in a enclosure

The 1TB Evo 840 has a 540Read and 520Write. How much of that do you think my laptop can handle? If it can only handle lets say 300 then I will still get it because it will still be faster then any hdd

As i said, I am using SSHDs (750GB) as my only laptop storage, we dropped the separate SSD + HD routine as the 0.9 second boot time advantage was deemed insgnificant and no one could even notice it w/o a stopwatch. For more on what SSHDs are and how they work, read some of these

That being said, once we moved over to PC Mark 7, the performance improvement [of the SSHD) was certainly nothing to scoff at. In PC Mark 7, the drive was able to put up very solid numbers in both the “starting applications” and the “gaming” benchmarks, which pushed it up way past the Scorpio Black. Additionally, with the boot up time test we saw that while the Momentus XT ultimately wasn’t able to boot up quite as fast as the SSD, it was able to come close, at only 15 seconds behind. Of course, it was able to boot up a full 28.5 seconds faster than the Scorpio Black, ......l.

Of course if you have the cash.... 1TB SSDs in 2.5" form factor will soon be available.

Again, we have Clevo lappies for use in the field using AutoCAD and (of course) we tend to game off hours with them .... lucky for us what's good for gaming is good for AutoCAD. :)

7200 rpm HD - Suitable performance once booted but slow boot time makes it inconvenient when traveling.

SSD + HD - Eliminates slow boot issue, can notice slight increase in speed when opening large programs like AutoCAD but once opened no performance difference....bit of a PITA breaking up what gets stores where.

SSHD - Best of both worlds..... no noticeable difference booting or opening programs, no "what goes here" / maintenance issues.

The Samsung Evo 840 is a 2.5" that is 6.8mm height so it should fit in a laptop right? Plus it doesn't look like the 850 is worth a $200 price increases for the performance difference.

I can't judge what the extra performance is worth to you. For me, I can't justify a SSD in a laptop at all since no one in the office has as yet been able to tell the two machines apart (SSD + HD vs SSHD) , we can't justify the additional expense and extra effort.

The only reason I want the 1tb ssd is I have a lot of games so I need a lot of storage. And I have yet to find a 1tb laptop hdd that is speedy. I guess what I can do is buy the evo. Clone it. Remove my current hdd and see how the ssd handles. If it isn't that fast in my laptop then I will return it for my money back and just use a sshd then. But if it is as fast as the one in my desktop then I will kwep it. Format my hdd and use it for my media storage till the 2tb spinpoint is out.

They do make a 1TB SSHD right? Because that is what I am wanting for my main storage size is 1TB

Most experiences I have encountered with peeps cloning SSD to HD didn't go well.

If it helps, on my desktop, I have (2) 256 GB Samsung 840 Pros and (2) 2 TB SSHDs. I have dual installs of games on the SSD and SSHD and couldn't observe any performance differences.

As for buying an SSD and returning it after "trying it out", that's something I find unethical.

Newegg has a 30 day money back. I have the 840 evo in my desktop. And I love it. It was a major increase over the 7200rpm hdd I had in it. And the load timea for games like bf4 and my heavily modded skyrim went way up.

And as for the cloning. I will be cloning from a hdd to the ssd. I don't have much of a choice since they don't ship windows cd anymore. Which I do have a windowa 8 pro 64 bit cd for my desktop. But the laptop uses just windows 8 64 bit. Plus idk how I would get my product key off it
