how do i check if its a hardware fault

Your laptop has a CD drive then. CD Drives aren't able to read DVDs unless it's a CD/DVD combo drive.

I see. Then instead of using that Media Direct software, have you tried using something else, maybe like VLC Media Player? That's a really good one
