Routers stop working after 20-30 mins

Hey Guys,

I'm new to this forum and I was really hoping if someone could help me with this. I have tried searching this forum and some other forums as well for the answers but none of them have worked for me. Here's the detail:

I have one modem/wireless router SAGEMCOM Fast 1704 which has the data line plugged in, WIFI has been turned off due to poor antenna and a TPLINK TL-WR741ND is attached to it using the LAN ports(not the WAN port) and has WIFI turned on for better signal reach. Then at the far end of the house I have a wireless repeater TPLINK TL-WA701ND which repeats the signal further on. It receives a signal of nearly 25-30 dB after which it repeats it.

DHCP is turned on, on the SAGEMCOM modem and turned off on both TP LINK routers.

SAGEMCOM IP is 192.168.1.1
TPLINK WIRELESS ROUTER IP 192.168.1.2
TPLINK REPEATER ROUTER IP 192.168.1.3

DHCP Range- 192.168.1.5 - 192.168.1.254

TPLINK REPEATER has the same channel and same SSID as default on the TPLINK ROUTER.

ALSO, I have tried using the WAN port and configuring the router to get dynamic IP from the modem and route the internet.

The internet drops after every 20-30 minutes and even in those 20-30 minutes it gives very erratic speeds.

First, you cant browse the internet and then you cant connect to the WIFI and then WIFI doesnt even show anymore.

On Desktop, Laptop, iPhone, Android phone, Smart TV. Main usage PC is a laptop (Acer Aspire S7-392, Windows 8.1).

The problem exists for all devices.

Reboot all three devices fixes it for another 20-30 minutes.

I have updated all firmwares on all devices. Reset all the devices and done configurations again but to no avail.

Running only the SAGEMCOM runs internet fine. Trying to repeat SAGEMCOMS wifi signal doesnt work as the TPLINK repeater constantly gets disconnected after every few seconds. But relaying it through the TPLINK router atleast runs the internet for 20-30 minutes. Normal speeds are 520 kbps through SAGEMCOM only but it remains in 0-200 kbps range when all routers are connected. Even then, if I plug in the laptop through LAN ports of the SAGEMCOM i get no drop connections and full speed even though through other routers either its dropped connections or low speeds.

Line attenuation and SNR ratings are great.

I was having the same problems 6 months ago but then it got solved again and now its back and its not going away.

Can anybody please help me out here. I really dont know what to try anymore.

I am attaching three files as well
i) ping 127.0.0.1 -t
ii) ping 192.168.1.1 -t (MODEM IP)
iii) tracert www.google.com

i dont know 100% what to suggest but i would try the following?

Have a look at the wireless channels being used by the AP/repeater, I think they should be manually set rather than auto, & different e.g 1 & 6.

I would also suggest "dumbing down" the access point features enabled to get it working. for example, if they support B/G/N, knock them down to just G. When trying N, suren off things like short guard interval and wide channels.

I'm assuming the problems you have are only on wireless?

Hey,

Thanks for the advice. I did try to change the wireless channels but the Repeater automatically assumes the channel it is repeating and gives no options to change it. The channel setting on the Wireless Router used to be automatic, so I downloaded a WiFi analyzer and checked interference on all channels, all were fine except for 6, so I picked 1 (also picked 2-12 to see differences). But yeah, cant change the channel of the Repeater. :(

Turning off all features seems like a good idea. I did turn off the firewalls on all the routers but I will disable some features of the access point.

The problem is on wireless, kind of. The SAGEMCOM modems wireless works fine on its own but as soon as you route it via either another Wireless Router or Repeater, it intermittently fails.

By the way, should have mentioned in the post. But the same Wireless Router + Repeater configuration works fine when I connect my mobile's 3g via (USB OTG + USB LAN), so I'm thinking it probably is either a fault in SAGEMCOM modem or there is an incompatibility issue.

There is an MTU option and its set at 1492 on the SAGEMCOM modem.

I have also tried various combinations of disabling features on the modems but none of them worked while some of them jammed the network completely.

I have read a few online reviews about this particular modem (SAGEMCOM F@st 1704) and literally ALL reviews are bad. With DCed connections and problems similar to mine. I guess it never occurred to me that it could solely be the modems fault as it was working fine a month ago.

Although my ISP strongly recommends this modem but I think I'm going to call their helpline and see if they can help or I am switching to LinkSys x3500 modem/router combined with TPLINK WA830RE wireless repeater as one review suggested that this pair works flawlessly.

If you have other suggestions, I'd love to know. Thank you for your help. :)

I cant access google drive from work but wildly varying ping/drops typically suggest interference. THe normal solution to this is changing channel but I think you said you already did this. You may wish to try enabling RTS/CTS, it can slow your transfer speeds down but improves reliability in your kind of setup. Look at the hidden node problem I'm not sure if your AP/ laptop/repeater could create this same scenario or similar.
