Try Ubuntu. It has a mix of good hardware support, long term support (5 years on the latest release), has a very large user base and help forum, works well out of the box (there are articles on what to do post-install for more very useful features), a huge distro so it has good developer support. A lot of new users also like Linux Mint which is based Ubuntu, but tweaked and maintained separate. The user interface is a bit more similar to windows.
