I'd like to be able to use rectangular icons — 32px wide x 16px High — but I seem to be limited in XP to 32x32 or 16x16 etc.

The icon will be used as a shortcut, but I can't get that to work either. Is it simply not possible in XP? Thanks

Not possible in Vista or Win7 either owing to the invisible "pixel grid" on the screen which demands that all icons have equal number of pixels in both planes.

Phillip thank you so much for settling this issue that has dogged me for the longest time. I have a very robust icon-editing/creating program called Microangelo which hints at being able to create "customized" icons of non-square orientation and will even let you glimpse it . . . before showing you a distorted icon, forced into the square box that (as you have confirmed) XP restricts you to.

I revisit this issue every now and then, this time related to my Show Desktop icon in the Quick Launch bar which forces a double-height taskbar to accommodate this one icon's height. I'll create/find something 16px x 16px and use it instead. Thanks!
