Does putting a background that is mostly black help save energy?

A small bit, but nothing that you're going to be like, WOW my hydro bill is $1000 less a year. Maybe a few cents.

Nope.
The display still has to display whatever color the background is. The pixels are powered and display their colors, black is a color, not the absence of color. So the best way to save energy is to lower the brightness, and turn the screen off when not in use.

It actually depends on the type of screen if your statement is true or not. CRT, OLED, AMOLED all benefit from a black screen. Cell phones like the S3 that have OLED screens do benefit as black is black, no pixel being shown. CRT's don't have to display a black dot, so no electron is hit on that point, and less power.

LCD usually have a full backlit screen via small tubes and then pixels light up for color, and to make black, it actually has to go full all colors turned on to black out the backlight. In this case, White is actually better.
