Hi

my desktop suddenly is having sound issues.
The speakers are on - as far as i can tell, everything is working.
is it possible that i messed up the sound settings?

i've owned this computer for 4 years and have never had a problem before

i am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Gigabite MB - no separate sound card

Thoughts?

many thanks
-Ethan

Solution
I havent used windows 7 for while now, but the process should be the same.

In the bottom right there is a Speaker icon, right click it and select Playback Devices, find your speakers and see if they are set to Default.
You can also go here by going through the control panel and selecting Sound.

If the problem still persists, try using a different set of speakers, heck you can even plug your headphones directly into the same plug your speakers are currently plugged into, if you still get no sound, something with that port might of simply died out, the cheapest fix for that is a new motherboard or buying a new computer. Really depends on how tech savvy you are.

Double check to make sure your plugging your speakers into the Green jack...

Hi

okay - here's what's going on

i was listening to music (stored on my HD) while i was working.
Suddenly, it started cut in and out - it would play then there was silence and would start playing again.

i checked my connections
everything looked good

i licked on the sound icon that's in the task bar
everything seems okay

i went to the control panel - Device Manager - there didn't seem to be any issues
i checked to see if there were driver updates
there was one found by windows and installed

now there is totally no sound
i tried the Windows Troubleshooter - everything seems okay.

thoughts?

Double check to make sure your plugging your speakers into the Green jack in the back of your computer, some computers have multiple colored jacks in the back.

If your tower has a headphone jack, try plugging it into the headphone jack and testing.

Other than those possible solutions, you could take the tower to a pc specialist like Milwaukee PC or somewhere similar and have them look at it.
They usually can look at it with you in the store and in most cases is free service. They may be able to help solve your problem for free or offer alternatives which may cost money.
