I have a stock speed i7 4770k, but when I open intel XTU and CPU-Z it says it is running at 4.2ghz. I just did an ai suite 3 fan xpert 2 run and it automatically put it at that. Is that okay? Is there something wrong? Is my cpu safe? Sorry I'm a noob, but I'm not sure :/

If your chip is at 72C then that's perfectly fine. BUT if you are gaming at 72C then I can imagine during some sort of stress test that your CPU would be far hotter than you would likely want it to be. That's just speculation either way but also a fairly good assumption.
Whatever temps you run at should basically be what you are comfortable with regardless. Just know that Intel only recommends 72C.
Your motherboard probably applied a slight overclock over the default speed. That's fine.

If in doubt, go back to your BIOS, click "XMP" and save those settings though that's what you may be at already.

When I clicked "XMP" my i7-3770K went to 4.1GHz, and my DDR3 memory was the proper frequency (in my case 2133MHz).

My temps idle are about 50 celcius. and when gaming around 55-65. Is that normal? Also I did the intel diagnostic tool and my CPU hit 100 * Celsius! I didn't know it was going to. Will this damage my cpu? Will it not run as well?

I personally wouldn't be comfortable with any temp above 80C for my CPU. Although some people are ok with 90C, 100C is FAR, FAR TOO MUCH. The first thing I would try and do is go to your BIOS and set everything back to default in case something was changed accidentally. When running Benchmark tests it is never good to run them while your CPU has Adaptive Mode turned on. This will allow an application to ask for more voltage to be provided to the CPU also causing extreme temperatures and possible damage. (It is never as bad at stock but I still would not do it.) I would set your clock speeds to Manual mode at 39x (3.9Ghz) This means turning off the Turbo Mode and making the CPU only run at 3.9 GHZ which is what the processor does by default on its own. (You may have to look up and check the voltages to have set for a 4770k to be set to manual mode at 3.9 before doing it.)
Also, as a fair warning, doing anything in the BIOS especially when messing with voltages can cause damage to your computer if you do not know what you are doing or do not have proper cooling.
Anyhow, after you are at 3.9 static mode I would then run benchmark tests to see what your temps are hitting.

EDIT** Just as a reference, I have a Noctua NH-D14 Air Cooler and an i7 4770k and my temps idle around 32 c with a 4.5 GHZ overclock. This leads me to believe that your idle temps are far to high
