I'm wondering if I should get a GTX 770 2GB or 4GB. I am planning on getting a second one in a year or so. But that's not 100% for sure. Why does everyone say get a 4GB if you're doing SLI? Thanks.

If you have multiple monitors, the 4 GB will help. If 4 GB costs more, I'd get the 2 GB if you have only one monitor.

because normally if you getting 2 in SLI, you are going to either be running multiple screens for gaming, or running a higher than 1080p screen like 1440p or 4k or something, and when you start going above 1080p, you tend to need more VRAM for bigger textures, etc. This does vary from game to game, but in general, bigger resolutions and more screens means needing more VRAM for games.

if it doesnt cost more than 20 or 30 more than go for it, the extra vram will help with a lot of newer games at high resolutions

i would recommend you get a r9 280x it has 3gb of vram already which is enough for 1440p and can run multi monitors but the best option thats the same price is the r9 290 it has 4gb vram enough for 4k( when you get multi monitors it can add up to or more than 4k) so the r9 290 is best also at its price range it actually is less/same price as 4gb version of the gtx 770 and will perform much better.

I believe the GTX 770 4gb are roughly around the same price as the r9 290 4gb, if you're open to that option. Same tier as the gtx 780.

As for the questions you're asking, the gtx 770 4gb for SLI is because its the vRAM of the main card that gets used I believe. If you get a 2gb card, then you'll be limited to that 2gb vRAM. With a 4gb card as the main card, I believe you can use 4gb over the 2gb, which would help in stronger setups that can utilize more vRAM.

in higher resolutions 1440p+ that extra vram WILL be used no doubt so a higher amount would help. the r9 290 is way faster, same price and performs just aswell as a 780. The 4gb in sli is usually used in multimonitor/high res setups where it is needed also yes sli uses the main cards vram so if both have 4gb then it will use 4gb if one is 2gb and the other is 4gb it will use the lowest common denominator(math!) so 2gb.
