Running Windows Vista 32-bit Home Basic (Version 6.0.6000)

I recently had to reset my OS to factory conditions, and one of the problems I've had thus far is the fact that some of the Notepad documents that were transferred to my external hard drive beforehand open with unintelligible script. Others on the external drive work just fine.

The file extension is normal, and I've tried opening the affected documents in WordPad, LibreOffice Writer and even Firefox, all to no avail.

I need to view these documents ASAP, how can this be done?

You can try this utility that helps to repair corrupted data in .jpg images. Try it on only one image to start with just to be sure it works correctly for your issue before trying it on multiple files.

I'd also recommend trying to open one of the problem images in Gimp, just to make sure it isn't your application that's the problem rather than the files themselves.

No. I did previously on a flash drive but I had to format that for problems with another computer. (I was born to be tormented by these machines.)

Now apparently I also seem to be having a problem with some JPEG files. I can open up a number of those and other image files, but I've run into a batch that says "This file format is not supported, or you don't have the latest updates..." My system is older, I realize that, but its installed updates EVERY DAY since the reset and taken nearly all my disk space. ETA: I tried the images in Paint and Firefox as well.

Unfortunately it sounds like the copied files were corrupted or were transferred onto a section of your external hard drive that has a problem. You should run a disk scan for errors on the external drive to make sure this is not the case. Are you opening them from the external drive or have you copied them back to your boot drive?

Thanks for that explanation.

The files open up the same way from from my external drive and when copied to my C: drive.

My computer ran an automatic scan on my external drive at one point, and I think it may have "fixed" an error, so it may be related. The drive is basically brand new, so I wouldn't have expected that, but it may be the case.

Luckily the Notepad documents only seem to be affected in one folder, and those weren't extremely important. I now have to figure out how to get those images back however.

From what I can tell, they all seem to be JPEG, but only some of those are affected. I'm thinking I may need the "updates to photo gallery" because suddenly pictures I've saved to my desktop after the reset won't even respond when clicked... although they did before.
This is somewhat exhausting.
